The problem
B2B software teams outgrow simple checkout the moment they need usage-based plans, proration, invoices in local formats and a portal customers can use without emailing support. Billing logic then leaks into the product and every plan change becomes a risky release.
The system
A billing service models plans, entitlements and usage events separately from the payment processor. Every charge, credit and refund is written to a ledger first. Webhooks are verified, de-duplicated and replay-safe. The customer portal handles invoices, card updates and plan changes. Admin tools issue credits and refunds with a full audit log.
What success looks like
Plan changes prorate correctly, failed payments retry on a schedule customers can see, and support fixes a billing issue without a developer. We'd track failed-payment recovery, support tickets about billing and time to launch a new plan.
